Eri Liao, born in Taipei, Taiwan, grew up immersed in the special traditions of the Tayal tribe (Indigenous Taiwanese) through her family. While studying at Tokyo University, she fell in love with jazz, a passion that led her to New York City. After her grandmother, a respected Tayal dancer and weaver, passed away, Eri devoted herself to music. She found her voice as a vocalist with Billy Harper and learned from pianist Barry Harris. Since 2015, based in Japan, Eri's captivating voice has mesmerized audiences with her captivating jazz and world music renditions, punctuated by her exceptional arrangements and original compositions. With her debut album "Song of the Red Tree" in 2017 and a mini-album "Ears of Rice, Two Waltzes" in 2019, she showcased her talent worldwide. Her performances at International Jew's Harp Festival in Berlin and a new album in 2023 with Haruka Strings reflect her musical journey. Balancing between Taiwan and Japan, Eri delves into her Tayal heritage, immersing herself in traditions while embarking on the ambitious task of translating jazz and bossa nova classics into the Tayal language. Her extraordinary fusion of preserving roots while embracing a diverse musical landscape remains a captivating focal point, attracting considerable attention.
