João Parahyba - Futuro Primitivo (Primitive Future) In 1995, after participating in the Banco do Brasil Musical project as part of Ulisses Rocha's trio, João Parahyba received an invitation from the musical director of that project, André Geraissati, to prepare a solo percussion project for the following year. Geraissati asked João to create something very unconventional and João told him about Suba (Mitar Subotic), his partner in a studio at the time. Together, João and Suba began to record the percussion instruments and then re-process the sounds in order to create a musical atmosphere which João would improvise over while Suba reprocessed the live sounds and mixed them with sound effects. From that point on, Parahyba began to compose with different rhythms and textures, one with tumbadoras (congas), one with metal bowls, one set up especially for the timba and so on. Next, João and Suba processed the material creating new textures, transforming conga grooves into melodies. berimbaus into bass lines thereby transforming the acoustic material into an electronic sound and discovering new timbres. Seven pieces were chosen from the original thirteen compositions and after much rehearsal, all the paraphernalia was taken to the CCBB Theater in Rio de Janeiro. João was alone onstage with his many percussion instruments and a portable radio tuned into the "Hora do Brasil" news program which was miked, filtered and then used as part of the sound canvas. From the mixing board, Suba sprang forth the ADAT musical atmospheres while simultaneously adding effects to João's live improvisations. At first the audience was taken by surprise by this different musical offering, but soon they were won over. The following year, João and Suba were part of the first university CCBB Musical tour which took them to the Northeast and through the state of São Paulo where they shared the bill with artists such as André Geraissati and legendary multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal. The seven pieces were released on the Instrumental no CCBB - Oswaldinho do Acordeon e João Parahyba CD which was part of a series featuring two different artists on each disc. Shortly afterward, three of the pieces were released again as "Future Primitive" on the Tributo Suba CD. Now, for the first time, the complete work including the seven live recordings and the six unreleased pieces will be released which gives an interesting perspective into the work methods utilized by João and Suba. The cover photo represents this since it is a photo of João on a video monitor taken by Suba. Both João and and Suba utilized the discoveries that took place during this period in other projects. This recording was offered to different labels, but there was little interest at the time. After Suba's premature death in 1999 and João's return to the Trio Mocotó in 2000, the work was put to the side. Unquestionably this is one of the most significant works that resulted from João and Suba's partnership.
