Personal profile

Born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. Byron started out on the local Pietermaritzburg pub circuit just after leaving school and completing a compulsory 2 year “National Service” stint in the SA Army. He gigged at the Polo Tavern, Ansonia Hotel, Eldorado Ladies Bar, Spur Restaurants, Capital Towers Hotel and other pubs in the Pietermaritzburg area. He ventured down to Durban and started playing at The Cockney Rebel at the Beach Hotel, and did various gigs at Rovers Old Boys Club and other clubs around Durban. This lead to a gig at Hickory’s in Ballito, when it was still a tiny village. Margate and the South Coast was next, as he played at The Yard O Ale, Margate Hotel, Faerie Glen Hotel, Wild Coast Sun and other venues on the South Coast. He was invited to enter the Battle of the Pub Muso’s at Hops in Ballito, and since then has been pro on the North Coast Circuit, appearing at Hops on occasion, Karibu Pub, Cane Cutters Resort, The Grandstand Sports Pub, Mo-Zam-Bik Restaurant, King Shaka International Airport (News Café), Emperors Club, and played at the Mr. Price Pro Beach Festival 2010, 2011 and 2012. He also appeared at the first North Coast Festival in January 2012, and more recently the Korongo Valley Festival in Ixopo. He has jammed a few sets at Zack’s Wilson’s Wharf in Durban with the legendary Steve Fataar. He has now relocated to his hometown, Pietermaritzburg, and recently completed a three month gig on Sunday’s at Olive & Oil Restaurant at Cascades Centre in the ‘Burra. He had a short stint at Westmore Park Club on Friday nights on his arrival back in his hometown. Byron performs covers (with or without backing tracks) and also writes his own material. He also does “Home Based” gigs at private functions at your own home. Byron has released his first album in 2013, titled “The Byron Love Consortium – Free Rebel”.
