Alan Moe Monsarrat was born in 1951 in Phenix City, Alabama. His parents were in the U.S. Army and he grew up in many different places. He started singing at 13 with a band near Tokyo, Japan. After moving back to the states he joined a band in San Antonio, Texas as a singer and later became the bass player as well. Moe began playing Reggae in Hawaii in 1973 and he co-founded the first reggae band in Texas, The Lotions. He now performs with Music4Life and The Mau Mau Chaplains in Austin, Texas. On April 20th, during the 2018 Austin Reggae Festival, the Mau Mau Chaplains received a proclamation from the City of Austin declaring that day as “Mau Mau Chaplains Day” in Austin. They were recognized for doing more than 500 shows at their epic weekly residency on Wednesday nights at Flamingo Cantina over the last 10 years.
General Smiley (Errol Bennet) began his career in the late 70s at Studio One in Jamaica under the direction of the late Sir Coxsone Dodd. He was in a duo, “Michigan and Smiley” who recorded their first number 1 hit Rub A Dub Style, followed by the equally popular Nice Up The Dance. Since then, he’s been working on many musical different projects with no shortage of lyrics.
