Personal profile
Bassist Irio O’Farrill has been performing and recording in the New York City area and internationally for many years. He earned a B. A. in music from New Jersey City University and furthered his studies at Manhattan School of Music and New York University. He has performed with Juan Carlos Formell, Bobby Sanabria and Ascención, the Chico O’Farrill Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Gary Morgan and Pan Americana, Dave Valentin, Ray Mantilla and Space Station, Daniel Ponce, Claudio Roditi, Steve Turre, Danny Rivera, Los Jovenes Del Barrio, Gloria Gaynor, Larry Gatlin, BeBe Winans, Eden Espinosa, Sarah Brightman, Laurie Beechman, The Dalton Gang, The Real Deal Big Band and many others. His Broadway credits include Cats, Grease, Footloose, The Rocky Horror Show, Hairspray, Brooklyn The Musical, The Wedding Singer, In The Heights, Mamma Mia and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. In 2006 he was part of the JCS All Star Band for Jesus Christ Superstar: Live In Concert in Hollywood, CA. Featuring Ted Neely, Yvonne Elliman, Ben Vereen, Clint Holmes and Jack Black. Irio is a faculty member of The Collective School of Music and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. He has also been an adjunct/artist in residence at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a co-author of the instructional book "Afro-Caribbean & Brazilian Rhythms for the Bass", published by Hal Leonard. He is featured in the books "The Working Bassist: What You Really Need to Know to Survive in New York City", by John Carey and "Funkifying The Clave", by Lincoln Goines and Robby Ameen. He has also been featured in Bass Player Magazine. Irio endorses Sadowsky Basses, BSX Bass, Dean Markley Strings and Eden Electronics amplification.
